Have you ever wondered if the God of all creation is listening to you?
We often miss the mark when it comes to prayer because we talk ourselves out of hearing an answer before God is able to speak. 1 John 5:14 says: "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us." Let's look at that scripture in detail today.
1. "This in the confidence we have in approaching God" Did you know that you can pray confidently? You can pray to the Most High because of the bridge that was established between you and God through Jesus Christ. Have you ever just thought of that? There is nothing that could restrict me from asking my earthly father about a situation. God is your father. You are His child. Approach Him with confidence because He is listening like a good father would always do.
2. "That if we ask anything" There is no such thing as too big prayers or too little prayers. You can ask our Heavenly Father anything because He truly desires to hear from you. You want to ask God why you're still single? Go for it. You want to ask God why He hasn't moved you to a new city? He's listening. You want to ask God what food you should eat for lunch? He cares to respond. Prayer is a conversation that invites you to learn the secrets and character of our God.
3. "According to His will" Now this is the part of the scripture that everyone jumps over. When we pray, we want to pray for God's will to be done in our lives. For example, you can pray that God moves you to a new job and sure enough, He will listen. But, if that new job is not where God wants you to be right now, He will not answer that prayer because it's going against His will. Make sense? Pray boldly and confidently and also pray that above all of your desires, that God's will takes its perfect place over your life.
4. "He hears us" The fact that God's word says that He has promised to hear me when I pray excites me! Even if I am praying the same prayer I've been praying for years, He hears me. Even if my prayers aren't polished and long like everyone else, He hears me. Even if I feel like my prayers are going unanswered, the truth is that He still hears me! This is my confidence. When I want to question if God is there, I read 1 John 5:14-15 and this promise helps me to come back to my senses.
"Lord, thank you for what you are doing in my life today. Thank you for opening my ears to hear your voice today and I pray that as you speak, the Holy Spirit will interpret what I don't understand. I pray that Your will, will take over my life and that everything that is not meant for me will walk away. I pray that my mind is renewed to understand your promises and plans for my life. Thank you for being close to me today and thank you for teaching me how to hear your voice. I love you Father and I love getting to know you more. Amen."
Be still. Be quiet. Listen.
